Are you considering Invisalign? When your orthodontist recommends a specific treatment plan, it can be difficult to understand the benefits and drawbacks that ‘real’ patients experience. In this sense, hearing a first-hand account from a patient can be extremely helpful. Rich from Albany, NY recently finished up his active treatment at Cooney Orthodontics Troy office where he saw both Dr. Tyner & Dr. Cooney.

Why did you choose Invisalign?

My bite definitely wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t something that bothered me or something I was really insecure about. This was the reason I was slightly hesitant to begin using the Invisalign aligners. However, after completing active treatment I finally appreciated my smile and noticed how misaligned it was to begin with. Now I could more effortlessly smile in a way I loved each time. If my only option was to receive traditional braces, I don’t believe I ever would have had orthodontic treatment done. Being someone well into my career, the thought of metal brackets crowding my mouth as I give presentations was extremely unappealing to me. The ease of treatment with Invisalign and knowing Cooney Orthodontics was the most experienced provider in the area, made it an easy choice.

Why is a smile important to you?

I was fortunate enough to have a nice natural smile without braces growing up, but I let it deteriorate over time. Today, your smile is on display more than ever with the presence and popularity of social media and zoom meetings. As “masks optional” starts to become increasingly a healthy norm again in our area (Albany, NY) your smile will be noticed now more than ever. Your smile and overall oral health is such a huge part of your first impression, that it will always be on your mind. It plays a major role in your health and happiness, so it’s important to invest in yourself and smile with the right Invisalign provider!

How long did you have Invisalign?

My orthodontist made it clear that each patient’s treatment time is different and depends on the amount of correction the aligners must make. For my own treatment, it lasted about 14 months, and was accelerated using AcceleDent. I didn’t have many appointments, and the ones I did were always enjoyable and showed progression (which is always exciting to see). I made sure I wore my clear aligners for as close to 22 hours per day as I could in order for the treatment time to remain on schedule. I noticed that the treatment time really flew by and consistently seeing improvement meant I was on the right path with each aligner swap.

Describe your experience at your first appointment.

My appointment was interesting because it was Halloween so showing up in a funny costume and a bit of a funky smile definitely threw off the docs a bit. I was always comfortable at Cooney Orthodontics because there are two Board Certified Orthodontic Specialists, Dr. Cooney & Dr. Tyner, that were extremely knowledgeable and trustworthy. The first appointment was great, and after getting my attachments put on, I was on my way to a healthier smile.

What was the hardest part of having Invisalign?

I grew up with the inability to play sports that require a mouthguard because my gag reflex has always been pretty bad. With this in the back of my mind, I was quite worried that I wouldn’t be able to wear my Invisalign retainers for the appropriate amount of time. However, after a while I really started to forget they were even there. At first, the rubber-bands were hard to get on, but you really become a pro once you practice a few times.

Is Invisalign painful?

The pain associated with Invisalign can be mitigated if you know how, so taking the necessary steps to do so is important if you want to be comfortable. In the beginning I’d forget to take the steps like slightly wearing down any edges with an emery board or using orthodontic wax and since I talk a lot throughout the day, I would have cuts in my mouth by night. I soon learned my lessons and the pain went away.

Did you have any fears or concerns prior to your appointment?

Prior to getting my smile back in order with the help of my amazing general dentist (shoutout Dr. Maestro & his team at Maestro Dental Wellness), I really hated the thought of sitting in any dental chair ever again. When I was ready to start Invisalign I tried to get over any fears by imagining the first day that someone would tell me I had a great smile. With my smile needing some fixing I knew I had a pretty complex road ahead to help fix my bite, but my dentist & Cooney Orthodontics worked hand-in-hand to ensure any fears were mitigated and questions were answered. Soon, my fears vanished and both the team at Cooney Orthodontics and Maestro Dental Wellness helped me immensely along my journey to a new smile.

Would you recommend Invisalign to someone?

To give a short answer, yes. I would recommend it to anyone who struggles with confidence in their smile and hesitant about braces. Your smile is an investment you get to use only while you’re living, so the sooner you feel confident, the better you’ll be in the long run. It didn’t take long to hear that first, “You have a great smile”, and it felt as great as expected. Completely worth it. And the best part? I get to hear that for the rest of my life!

What is your advice to those thinking about choosing Invisalign?

My first piece of advice is to find an orthodontist that feels like a true partner on your smile journey. They should also be someone who will work well with your general dentist and is happy to help whenever needed. It’s so important that they are collaborating because there are decisions that need to be made together (decisions you may know nothing about). Look for someone with iTero Scanning machines – they’re great for your consultation as you don’t have to take messy impressions.
